Junior Takeover Day is always one of excitement for the Junior class. It marks our growth of upperclassmen into the next true role models and leaders of Big Sky. I went to the school administration and asked how they plan to execute Junior Takeover Day to make it an enjoyable experience for everybody.
As far as the planning for this year’s Junior Takeover Day, “We don’t have anything planned,” said Assistant Principal Jennifer Courtney, “We were actually waiting for Juniors to approach us with what their ideas and suggestions were.”
Her suggestions on how to reach the administration for planning were, “I would say requesting a meeting would be the best way to connect with us, they can do that through either Wendy Gay or Karen Sweeny at the office. Or they could drop a sticky note on my door.”
When asked about past junior takeover days, she described the informal ones as “…kids probably not making the best choices, kids sleeping in the parking lot.” Courtney says last year was the first time being since she’s been here that the junior takeover day has been really supervised by administrators and staff members. “We’ve swung in a positive direction that we’re perfectly fine with the Juniors having it.”
To make Junior Takeover Day safe and enjoyable for everyone, Jennifer suggested that Juniors “Be reminded that we are on school property therefore all the regular school rules apply. Also this is not a hazing ritual. We have had incidents where underclassmen were walking through the parking lot and the soon to be Seniors were being really disrespectful. This day is not meant to tear the grades apart, but instead this day is purely meant to be one of celebration.”
Wendy Gay at the main office, when asked her favorite Junior Takeover Day memory, said, “My favorite memory was when the juniors lined up outside of the front doors, and when the bell rang, they handed everybody icecream sandwiches and popsicles. It was a very positive moment.”
If you have any ideas or suggestions for Junior Takeover Day, set up a meeting to talk to either Jennifer Courtney or Natalie Jaeger at the central office.
