Editor’s Note: This is a part of the Big Sky Sun Journal’s 2026 April Fool’s Day coverage. This is meant to be purposeful, humorous misinformation.
As of April 1st, Big Sky will no longer be represented as the Big Sky Eagles and will now be known as the Big Sky Turkeys.
The decades of Eagle pride have come to an end with the decision made by the administration at Big Sky High School. Admin said their reasoning is related to the “too polarizing” social climate of the present day, and the belief that there are common political parties associated with the eagle mascot that staff are concerned will negatively influence Big Sky students.
In addition to issues around patriotic game wear during football season, the administration has decided that the eagle provides a too-politically motivated school representation.
The solution is to follow Benjamin Franklin, who proposed the idea of the turkey being our country’s national symbol back in 1780.
Similar to our admin and staff, Franklin believed that the turkey was a more respectable bird than the bald eagle. Head principal Jennifer Courtney stated, “We understand it’s a big shift, but we feel that it better reflects the student body. Turkeys protect their flock, they are known to be grounded, and are deeply rooted in American tradition without the aggressive stance of an eagle.”
Courtney emphasized that it’s not just admin and staff concerned about the political influence of the eagle mascot. Over 25 parents have reported a complaint to the school this year regarding the mascot and their request for a more neutral animal.
The school believes this is the safest and smartest transition. Changes in murals, statues, uniforms, and chants will take place in May during our first Turkey Talk assembly. Gobble gobble, turkey, Happy April Fool’s!
