As the 2024-25 school year is coming to a close, the Sun Journal talked with some of the players and coaches who made this season happen.
Baseball
This is the first year of high school baseball.
Baseball has just now come to all AA high schools in Missoula. For over 30 years, softball has been a sport you can enter in the spring, but never baseball. The Big Sky Sun Journal reported on the first high school season in the story here.
Big Sky High School had a great season with a 11-5 overall record. Big Sky made it to state this year, placing third behind Frenchtown High School and Hamilton-Darby High School.
Eagles baseball also went on to beat out their crosstown rival, Sentinel High School (7-9). Big Sky beat Sentinel on live television playing on Allegiance Field, the home of the PaddleHeads, a pioneer league baseball team in April.
Softball
Big Sky softball had a great year as well, finishing out their season with an 18-6 overall record.
Big Sky placed fourth in the AA Western region behind Glacier in second place with a 16-3 overall record, and Helena in first with a 17-2 record. Big Sky had six new starters and played four freshmen in the line up for multiple games.
Briella Wilson, a junior and pitcher for Big Sky, said, “I think everyone just showed up and showed out, and we got a lot of wins as a result.”
Wilson said a personal highlight from the season happened during state.
“I think I locked in and got us some strikeouts that were crucial.” Wilson noted that the team worked really well this year.
“Our team was really like a family, and that is very crucial for winning. We were able to fight for each other.”
Track
Big Sky track also put on a show this year, breaking three school records.
The boys’ team placed 5th overall at state, and the girls’ track team placed 10th overall.
Isaiah Cowan, a senior at Big Sky, was involved in the three different records set this spring. Cowan set a new school record in the 800 meter event, with a time of 1:55.67, and also broke the 1600 meter event record with a time of 4:20.62.
The 4×400 relay team also set a new school record, with a time of 3:19.94. The team is made up by Adam Guajardo, Blake Williams, Brady Williams, and Isaiah Cowen.
Guajardo, a junior at Big Sky, has been competing in track since he was in seventh grade. He said that the 4×4 team treated the event just like any other event.
“We didn’t come in thinking we were going to break the record. We just warmed up as we usually do and then went as hard as we could,” Guajardo said.
Tennis
Big Sky tennis went through a change this year with a new coach stepping in. The new coach is Maria Goheen. |
Senior Liam Baldassin placed third in singles, and seniors Colter Jensen and Eli Farley placed third in doubles at divisionals.
Junior Brady McInnis placed second and juniors Katie Williams and Chloe Dosier placed third at divisionals.
Baldassin was third in singles. He said a personal highlight was, “beating the number one player from Sentinel, or beating the number two player for Hellgate.”
Tennis coach Maria Goheen could not be reached for comment before this story was published.
