This Thursday, Big Sky’s girls’ basketball team will travel to play Bozeman High School for the first game in their playoff run.
“Obviously we want to make a deep run into this state tournament,” said Michela Anderson, assistant varsity coach, in a recent interview.
The girls’ team is confident in their ability to advance with a plan to dominate not only Bozeman High School, but any team that crosses their path.
“We’re taking this one game at a time,” said team captain Kaydence Couture. “We don’t really care what they’re ranked. We have to win every game, and we know that.”
Couture talked about how she feels team chemistry and camaraderie is high at this point in the season. “I think [team morale] is high. After our loss in the middle of the season, we kind of, like I said, banded together, and we’re super excited headed to this game,” Couture said.
A week earlier, the Big Sky boy’s team traveled to Capitol High School for their first playoff game. In an interview before the matchup against the Bruins, head coach Zach Murphy discussed the team’s plan before the game.
“We’re taking it one possession at a time. If we wanna go to the state tournament, we have to win this game,” Murphy said. “We gotta break it down quarter by quarter and just stay focused on our process of what we can do to win every single possession.”
The boys unfortunately did not succeed in their goals and lost to Capitol 38-55. Cormack Batt, a junior on the Big Sky varsity team, said the team did not play as well as they could have.
“We were prepared, we did everything at practice and we just forgot it all,” Batt said. “We just had to make our shots man, if we had made everything we would have won.”
Some things Batt noticed the team did well at were, “our guards handled the pressure all the time, and then we stayed calm throughout the game, even though we lost.”
Batt added that, “we definitely would have won if we played at home, I mean with the crowd and everyone there, we would have won.”
Cormack also talked about how the Big Sky boys are ready to be back next year.
“We know what it takes, we know if we’re here next year, [this is] what it takes and we will win [because of] that,” Batt said.
Anderson echoed the same sentiment about the girls’ upcoming game.
“We had the tough stretch of three losses in a row, but the girls kind of rebooted themselves and they’re locked in and ready to make a deep playoff run.”
