After Big Sky won the GOAT games against Sentinel for the first time, students and staff decided to celebrate by hosting a first-ever “Gertie Dance.”
The dance will happen this Saturday, March 8, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Big Sky auditorium.
The dance is Sadie Hawkins-style, where girls ask guys, and is semi-formal. The dance will include a DJ, lights, and will be very similar to homecoming, according to Big Sky Spanish teacher and student government advisor Emma Keffeler. Gertie, the GOAT games golden goat trophy, will even be out in front of the auditorium so students can take photos with her, Keffeler said.
The idea of having a Gertie dance came about because seniors and student body presidents Auna Belarde and Tenny Smith both heard talk that students wanted another dance instead of just homecoming, Keffeler said. Also, underclassmen don’t have another dance to go to other than homecoming because prom is for juniors and seniors.
Big Sky administrators and Officer Cameron will be around the opening of the dance and in the auditorium to make sure “nobody is making poor choices,” Keffeler said.
The school is hoping to have around 200 people at the dance. As of March 6, Keffeler said the school had sold around 130 tickets. “We know the last couple of days is when we sell the most,” explained Keffeler.
Keffeler says that the current student leadership has worked really hard to put this dance together and “everyone should go, it will be fun.”
