Earlier this month, Big Sky High School’s wrestling team and swim team went to their state competitions.
The Eagles wrestling team had 22 kids go to state on February 13th, and six placed in the “top” according to Principal Jennifer Courtney. Individually, Big Sky had some top finishers:
Senior Tanner Davis took 4th to Lane Chivers (Flathead\Kalispell).
Sophomore Quincey King took 3rd over Kohen Rilley (Flathead/Kalispell)
Senior Lucia Schlapfer finished 2nd to Madalyn Deiter (Great Falls).
Junior Hattie Marrow took 1st over Soraya Shirley (Billings Senior).
In a recent interview, Hattie Marrow said she has been wrestling since sixth grade, but had been admiring her sister and the sport since 2nd grade.
“Once I got to middle school and (was able) be part of it, I was really excited,” Marrow said about wrestling.
She went on to say that February’s state championship win marks a lot of accomplishments for her.
“My freshman year I got to go to state and I got to see all of the other finalists at the placing matches, and I thought that was really cool,” Marrow said. “I was really jealous, so to be down there on the floor (this year) with all the other high level people competing was a really good feeling.”
The Eagles swim team also competed in their state meet on February 14th and 15th, traveling to Great Falls.
Big Sky Senior Aiden McKenzie placed in two events, taking 4th in the100 meter fly and 5th in the boys’ 50 yard freestyle.
The Big Sky girls took 3rd in the 200 meter freestyle relay and 5th in the 400 yard relay.
Overall, the girls took 8th and boys took 9th at the state tournament.
Big Sky is a co-op with Loyola Sacred Heart and Frenchtown, meaning all three schools pool together to create one swim team. Their co-op practices together with Sentinel and Hellgate, who have their own teams, at the University of Montana, according to assistant coach Jenell Roberson.
Because of this, Rebecca Peterson, Big Sky activities secretary, said it’s hard to get representation for the swim team here at Big Sky.
Despite this difficulty, Roberson says there’s a lot of new people on the team this year, and in all they’ve had a strong season.
