Tax season is around the corner, and with this comes the considerations of how the school should allocate their budget for the year.
I have discovered that every year, a massively disproportionate amount of funding goes to scholarship programs compared to their actual worth.
Through my research, I’ve discovered that last year alone, $83.35 was given to these programs. This makes up a staggering 0.003% of the school budget! This is an unacceptable amount, especially considering that this money could be used to fund much more worthwhile accounts, like the football team.
Last year, the football team was allocated $120,000, which was barely enough to cover their heated benches and their yearly vacation to the Bahamas. Although not much, this small sum of money could provide the football team with the right amount of comfort that they need to perform at their highest level.
Through my reporting, I spoke with several students and teachers about this topic, and they all agree that this is a serious issue.
“I just think that they are too greedy,” said one student that we interviewed, who asked to be called H. Wilson.
Wilson continued, “Students that I know regularly steal from these accounts, I should know because I am one of them. There are much better uses of this money, like the Big Sky Chess Club.”
Another student, who asked to be called W.V.T. Ine, had this to say: “I think it’s very sad how much funding is wasted away in scholarship funds, and I am glad that there is finally someone who is standing up to the administration’s tyranny.”
After looking at the opinion of the students and examining the cold hard facts, it is clear that sponsored scholarships are a terrible idea, and the promotion of them is pushing Big Sky in the wrong direction.
We must rally together as a school to stop this nonsense.
