On Tuesday, January 28, Big Sky Wrestling had their senior night matches against Flathead and Glacier.
Around 100 people showed up to celebrate and support the wrestlers, and families made collages of the seniors that sat along the trophy case for spectators to view as they walked into the main match entrance.
Although official scores were yet to be confirmed by the time this story was published, a few Big Sky seniors had successful matches.
Senior Tanner Davis won his two matches on Tuesday and is ranked fifth in state.
Lucia Schlapfer, another senior who is currently first in the West and a close second in state, also won both of her matches, pinning Flathead in the third period and Glacier in the first.
In an interview with Big Sky Wrestling Coach Jade Rauser, he said, “Lucia has a huge chance at running for a state title.”
And Schlapfer doesn’t plan on stopping at high school. She’s committed to wrestle for the University of Providence in Great Falls this fall.
Schlapfer said she feels good about the Big Sky team she’s leaving behind, as this year has the record for the most girls in wrestling.
“I think me going off to college and showing people that it’s possible to do this after high school will encourage a lot more girls,” Schlapfer said.
