Wrestling home opener: One to behold

Ava McPhillips, staff writer

Thursday the 6th of December at 7:00 Big Sky wrestling had their first home game against the Flathead Braves. Big Sky ended up losing 28-31, but it was down to the last match. This is much improved from last year when the Braves beat every one of our varsity team, but the Braves did go on the win state last year.

The biggest stand out of the night was when Wyatt Shinn was down by 2 and about to be pinned in the last seconds of the match. But then the other team was called for potential danger. Wyatt then got an escape with 5 seconds left and finally to win the game he got a takedown. Awarding Big Sky 6 points.

Big Sky got an early lead winning the first 3 matches, but Flathead slowly made they’re way back into the game. After Tony Silveira lost 2-10 Flathead pulled ahead of Big Sky. Isaac Ayers and Dayne Martin won their matches making to score tied at 28-28. Making the final Big Sky player Trevin Welzien to help get Big Sky their much-needed points to win the match.

Trevin pulled ahead early in the match, quickly getting 4 points, but the Flathead competitor pulled ahead and beat Trevin. Making the final score 28-31 Flathead.

Although Big Sky didn’t come out with a win they fought hard and made many improvements from last year. It was evident that spectators and competitors alike were deeply invested in this match until the nail-biting, very end.
