First Year IB Diplomas Given
June 7, 2017
In a few days our Big Sky seniors will be walking across the stage to get their high school diplomas. Big Sky High School helps students to graduate with not only a diploma in their pocket but some college credit to go along with it.
IB stands for the International Baccalaureate Program. The school’s IB program helps students to step outside of their comfort zones and look at things from different perspectives. Students can start in as early as middle school. In this program students take core electives that are taught at a college level.
One of the most popular class is the Theory of Knowledge class. “This class is usually the favorite because it is a discussion based class that kids are usually drawn too,” IB teacher Jay Bostrom states. In ninth and tenth grade, IB helps you to prepare for the vigorous diploma program in eleventh and twelfth grade.
However, this IB program is anything but easy, the main focus is academics. Students who are multiple sport athletes might choose not to do the program because they would have to narrow it down to just one in order to do all the extracurricular activities that are involved with the program.
Although the program is tough, it all pays off in the end. Students who complete the program enter the world with open perspectives because of being challenged to step outside their comfort zone in high school. Not only do students learn how to absorb information rather than memorizing, students can come out of the program with up to two years of college credit!
