New Staff Profile: Mrs. Szatkiewicz (EmpowerMT)

Branson Baker, Intro to Journalism

Sun Journal: What has lead you to this profession?

Ms. Szatkiewicz: I graduated from the University of Montana with a social work degree. I have been working with Empower Montana, which is a local non-profit. That does your guys’ freshmen training. And they had an AmeriCorps position that they wanted filled and they wanted me. And so then I did it.

Sun Journal: Did you have an interest in this job before?

Ms. Szatkiewicz: Yeah, I really like working with young people. And I really like the idea of working in a school because I think school kind of sucks a lot of time. For me, at least, high school, and middle school, and elementary school really sucked. I hated it.

So I like the idea of getting to work with youth and getting to work with them in a school because my end goal is hopefully I make it a little better then when I was in it.

Sun Journal: What do you enjoy about your job?

Ms. Szatkiewicz: I really enjoy getting to build relationships and getting to know the students and the young people here. I thin k that’s pretty cool. As you know they’re all so different. And so I think that’s pretty fun.

And I also think it’s pretty fun to get to know the more “school” side of it. Like the more “faculty” persons. Like, I go to all these meetings and listen. Listen to teachers, listen to your principal talk about how much they love the school and what they want to change and what they would like to go the same. So I think that’s kind of interesting. Especially since I hated high school so much.

Sun Journal: Alright that’s it, thank you.

Ms. Szatkiewicz: Yeah, thank you.
